On Memorial Day, students and staff at Buckeye Union High School welcomed home one of their own as Class of 1993 graduate and current Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Carlos A. Ruiz, returned to campus for a special visit with the school’s JROTC program.

Ruiz, who graduated from Buckeye Union High School in 1993 before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps later that same year, now serves as the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps - the highest enlisted rank in the Marine Corps. His Memorial Day visit carried special significance as students had the opportunity to hear firsthand from a leader who has dedicated his life to service, sacrifice, and country.

The visit began with a presentation led by BUHS JROTC instructor MSgt Tammy Pechac alongside students from the program. Ruiz spent time engaging with cadets, answering questions, sharing stories from his distinguished military career, and encouraging students to pursue excellence in whatever path comes next for them.

At Buckeye Union High School and across Buckeye Union High School District, preparing students for their β€œNEXT” remains a point of pride - whether that journey leads to college, career, military service, or other opportunities beyond graduation. Ruiz’s journey from BUHS student to the highest enlisted position in the Marine Corps stands as a powerful example of what Buckeye students can accomplish through dedication, discipline, and perseverance.

Following the presentation, Ruiz toured the school’s air rifle range where he went a few rounds with one of the student cadets in some friendly competition. Members of his team eventually joined in as well, creating an exciting and memorable experience for students in the program.

The visit served as a meaningful and inspiring experience for BUHS students, especially on Memorial Day, as cadets and staff reflected on the importance of leadership, service, sacrifice, and honoring those who have served the nation.

A native of Sonora, Mexico, Ruiz enlisted in the United States Marine Corps out of Buckeye, Arizona, on November 2, 1993. Throughout his career, he has served in leadership roles across the globe and today serves as the highest-ranking enlisted Marine in the Corps.

In addition to his military accomplishments, Ruiz earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Arizona Global Campus.

For current BUHS students, Ruiz’s visit was more than a homecoming - it was a reminder that greatness can begin right here in Buckeye and that the opportunities awaiting students after graduation are limitless.
