Student running lights for dance show

As we celebrate National Arts in Education Week, we are proud to shine a spotlight on our incredible Fine Arts programs, teachers, and students at Buckeye Union High School! The arts are not just thriving at BUHS, they are helping to shape a school culture where students truly receive a world-class education and embody the 3 Bs of Buckeye - Believe, Belong, and Become.

Our Fine Arts programs do more than nurture artistic talent - they empower students to become well-rounded individuals equipped with essential life skills like creativity, communication, problem solving, collaboration, time management, and self-discipline. These experiences support academic success, foster emotional well-being, and prepare students for life beyond high school.

All of our arts programs at BUHS provide unique opportunities for students to explore their passions and find their place:

🎨 Visual Arts – Guided by two outstanding educators - Mrs. McNelley and Mrs. Coryell - students create in both 2D and 3D mediums, from drawing and painting to sculpture and mixed media. These classes help students believe in their creative abilities and develop critical thinking skills through self-expression.

🎶 Music – Our music program, instructed by Mrs. White and Mrs. Coryell, provides group and individual music opportunities - including Marching and Concert Bands, Concert and Unified Choirs, Indoor Guard and Percussion Ensembles, and beginning-advanced Instrumental Music classes. Students learn discipline, teamwork, and performance—building strong connections and a sense of belonging through shared musical experiences.

🎭 Theatre Arts – On stage or behind the scenes, students in our theatre program grow in confidence and communication, under the direction of Mr. Haslanger. Whether performing or managing lighting and set design, they explore their talents and become creative problem-solvers and collaborative thinkers.

💃 Dance – Our dance program, led by Mr. H., welcomes students from beginning to advanced levels, encouraging growth in technical skill, physical expression, and personal confidence. Through dance, students belong to a supportive, inspiring environment that values movement, artistry, and discipline.

These programs reflect Buckeye Union High School's purpose and culture - helping students to believe in themselves, belong to a creative and supportive community, and become the best versions of who they are meant to be.

None of this would be possible without the tireless dedication of our exceptional Fine Arts teachers, who guide, mentor, and inspire our students every day. And it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our families, alumni, and community partners, who help these programs flourish.

We invite you to continue supporting the arts at BUHS by attending performances and exhibitions, volunteering your time, or helping provide resources that make creative opportunities possible for every student.

Together, let’s continue - but not just during National Arts in Education Week - to invest in the arts, in our students, and in the kind of school culture where every Hawk can believe, belong, and become. Go Hawks!
